Motivation + Discipline = Consistency

Last Wednesday - 3rd June - was Global Running Day.  This is a day when, all around the world, people celebrate running and runners of all abilities - whatever the distance, the celebration is about placing one foot in front of the other and setting a pace. A day when people talk about what running means to them, plan to run, dress to run, eat to run and get out and run.  This is basically every day in our household. Running dominates our family conversation and no plans are made without verifying the viability and timing of runs. Although I am not a runner, my immersion in the lives of runners has given me an awestruck appreciation for their passion, discipline, perseverance, determination and generosity.  But mostly their discipline.  Runners know that any break they take from running, will necessitate a slog back in terms of their fitness and their enjoyment.  Consistent practice results in progress.

Spotlight

The color of beetroots should be enough to alert you to their nutritional wealth. Full of fiber, vitamin C, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and other vitamins and minerals, beets are also a great source of nitrates. And nitrates make your own body's energy production significantly more efficient.  They do this by increasing the amount of oxygen that can be absorbed by the muscles during exercise. For athletes this oxygen boost means being able go faster for longer. But you don't have to be an athlete to reap the benefits of beets as nitrates help lower blood pressure too.

Practice this

Schedule exercise into your day and make it as non-negotiable as brushing your teeth. There is no question your health and hygiene depend on daily brushing, and the same is true for moving your body every day.  Walk, run, bike, swim, dance, row, roll. If you enjoy it, do it. Get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day. Keep practicing, keep progressing and keep challenging yourself. So open your diary and plan to move.

Recipe

Beets of course - plain pickled (throw them in salads, on rice bowls, in sandwiches) and pickled beet hummus (sub for regular hummus) -
